A thali that does the job
The plate is simple: vegetables, some protein, a measured starch, and less oil than the spoon wants to pour.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Half the plate can be vegetables or salad, a quarter dal, curd, paneer, egg, or meat, and a quarter roti or rice. Ghee and oil are measured in spoons, not moods. Sweets are food for an occasion, not a second lunch. This pattern serves blood pressure, sugar, and weight better than a week of juice and salad followed by a week of defeat.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- You are hungry again an hour after a meal of only rice.
- Weight is creeping, mostly at the waist.
- Constipation from almost no vegetable.
- A child or a pregnant woman being put on an adult ‘diet plate’. They need their own advice.
What usually sits underneath
Refined starch digests fast and leaves you hungry. Protein and fibre slow that. Oil is the most concentrated calorie in the kitchen and the least noticed. None of this requires imported grain.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Cook one vegetable at both main meals. Frozen peas count.
- Keep dal or curd in the same meal as the roti.
- Use a spoon for oil and put it away.
- Eat fruit instead of drinking it.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- A diet that has become so strict you are dizzy, losing hair, or pregnant and under-eating.
- An illness that needs a special diet: kidney failure, advanced liver disease, or a prescribed diabetes plan.
- An eating pattern in a teenager that looks like fear of every food.

Questions people ask
Is rice bad?
No. A large pile of rice with no dal is the problem. Measure it.
Are multigrain biscuits healthy?
Most are biscuits. Read the sugar. An apple is clearer.
What about late dinner?
Earlier is better for reflux and sleep. The plate still looks the same.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
