Iron on an ordinary Indian plate
Spinach is not a treatment for a haemoglobin of 7. It is one food among several. Paleness, breathlessness, and a low report need iron in a dose food cannot supply.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
There are two kinds of iron in food. Meat and eggs provide the kind that is absorbed easily. Dal, greens, jaggery, and millets provide the other, which needs vitamin C and suffers in the presence of tea and calcium. Women with heavy periods, pregnant women, and children are the people who run out. A tablet, if prescribed, should be taken. Food keeps the stores from emptying again.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Tiredness and pale inner eyelids.
- Breathlessness on a climb you used to manage.
- Craving ice, mud, or chalk.
- Black stools and faintness. That can be bleeding, not iron tablets. Iron tablets do darken the stool, but they should not make you faint.
What usually sits underneath
Loss exceeds intake. Periods, pregnancy, a growing child, a bleeding pile, or a stomach that is quietly losing blood are the usual reasons. Diet is the background, not always the whole cause.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Add a source of vitamin C to the iron meal: lemon, amla, guava, tomato.
- Drink tea an hour away from the meal or the tablet.
- Include dal, chana, eggs, or meat you already eat.
- If a tablet was prescribed, take it for the full course. Recheck as asked.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- A very low haemoglobin, chest pain, or fainting.
- Black stools if you are not on iron, or red blood.
- A child who is extremely pale or breathing fast.
How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in
We can confirm the count and look for the cause, including bleeding, rather than only handing another syrup. There is no appointment form on this website.
Questions people ask
Does jaggery replace a tablet?
No. It can be part of a meal. It will not lift a significantly low haemoglobin on its own.
Why is my stool black?
Iron tablets do that. Tarry black stool with dizziness is different. If you are unsure, come in.
Can I take iron with milk?
Calcium interferes. Separate milk and the tablet by a couple of hours.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
