Acidity and the late, heavy dinner
A burning rise after a late oily meal is usually the stomach. A burning pressure with sweat can be the heart. Do not let the word acidity close that question.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
The valve at the lower end of the food pipe leaks acid upward when you lie down with a full stomach. Large meals, tea, coffee, oily food, smoking, and a tight waist make it worse. Weight around the middle pushes the stomach up. Most people improve with earlier dinners and a raised head end. Long-term acid tablets should be a decision, not a habit copied from a parent.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Burning behind the breastbone after meals, worse on lying down.
- A sour taste in the mouth in the morning.
- Difficulty swallowing, or food that sticks. That is not simple acidity.
- Black stools, vomiting blood, or unexplained weight loss.
What usually sits underneath
The lining of the food pipe is not built for acid. Repeated exposure inflames it. A stomach infection called Helicobacter, painkillers, and stress ulcers are separate problems that can live in the same neighbourhood.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Finish dinner at least two to three hours before lying down.
- Raise the head end of the bed by a few inches if nights are the problem. Extra pillows alone often just bend the neck.
- Cut the late tea and the post-meal cigarette. Both loosen the valve.
- Use an antacid for occasional relief if it suits you, and see a clinician if you need it most days.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Chest pressure, sweat, or breathlessness. Treat that as a heart symptom until proved otherwise.
- Vomiting blood, black stools, or trouble swallowing.
- Weight loss or persistent vomiting.

Questions people ask
Is milk a cure?
It soothes for a moment and can provoke more acid. It is not a plan.
Are spicy foods forbidden?
They bother some people and not others. A late heavy meal bothers almost everyone with reflux.
Do I need endoscopy?
Not for straightforward heartburn that settles. Yes if there are alarm symptoms, or if it persists despite a proper trial of change.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
