Constipation that is a habit, not a disease
A day without a stool is not an emergency. A change in bowel habit that is new at fifty, with bleeding, is not something to solve with a daily laxative.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
The colon moves stool along and reabsorbs water. If you ignore the urge, eat almost no fibre, and drink little, the stool dries and the habit gets worse. Constipation is also caused by iron tablets, some painkillers, thyroid disease, and, less often, a blockage. A new pattern, blood, or weight loss needs a clinician, not a stronger syrup.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Hard stools and straining, in a person whose habit has always been slow.
- Bloating that eases after you go.
- Blood on the paper that is clearly from a painful tear.
- Blood mixed in the stool, black stools, or a feeling of incomplete emptying that is new.
What usually sits underneath
Low fibre, low water, inactivity, and a toilet you postpone because you are on a bus or in a meeting. The rectum learns to ignore the morning urge. Some people also have a pelvic floor that does not relax.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Drink enough that urine is pale, unless you are on a fluid restriction.
- Add fibre you tolerate: fruit, vegetables, isabgol with water if advised. Increase it slowly.
- Walk. The bowel moves when you move.
- Answer the morning urge. A footstool under the feet, knees higher than hips, helps the angle.
Do not take stimulant laxatives every day for months without advice.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Bleeding, anaemia, or weight loss.
- Vomiting with a swollen belly and no stool or gas.
- Constipation that alternates with diarrhoea and is new.

Questions people ask
How often is normal?
Anywhere from three times a day to three times a week can be normal if the stool is soft and the pattern is yours.
Is tea in the morning enough?
It triggers some people. It does not replace fibre, water, and a response to the urge.
Are piles the cause?
Piles are often the result of straining, not the cause of a slow bowel.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
