Gums that bleed when you brush
Bleeding gums are a sign you should brush better and see a dentist, not a sign to stop brushing. Stopping lets more plaque collect, and the bleeding gets worse.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Plaque at the gum line inflames the gum. It swells and bleeds. Over years the bone under the gum recedes and teeth loosen. Pregnancy, diabetes, and some medicines that enlarge the gum make this louder. A ulcer that does not heal in two weeks, a white patch, or a lump in a tobacco chewer is not gingivitis. It needs to be seen as a possible cancer until proven otherwise.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Blood on the brush, with gums that look puffy.
- Bad breath that does not match how often you brush.
- A loose tooth, or gum that has receded.
- A non-healing ulcer, a numb lip, or a swelling in the neck.
What usually sits underneath
Bacteria in plaque release chemicals that inflame the gum. Tartar is plaque that has hardened and cannot be brushed off. Only a cleaning removes it. Vitamin C deficiency is a rare cause in people who eat almost no fruit. Leukaemia can present with gum bleeding. It is uncommon and it is the reason a clinician should see gums that bleed heavily with little plaque.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Brush twice a day at the gum line, gently, with a soft brush.
- Clean between teeth with floss or an interdental brush if your dentist has shown you.
- Do not use a hard stick that tears the gum.
- Get tartar removed. Then maintain it. The cleaning is not a failure if you return to the same habit.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Bleeding that is heavy or comes with nosebleeds and bruising.
- A ulcer still present at two weeks.
- Swelling of the face or fever.

Questions people ask
Should I brush a bleeding gum?
Yes, gently. Avoiding it is how the disease progresses.
Will a mouthwash replace brushing?
No. Mouthwash is an extra. The brush does the work.
Is gum bleeding a sign of dengue?
It can be one sign, in the right season, with fever. Bleeding gums every month without fever are usually the gum itself.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
