Toothache until you can be seen

A painkiller can quiet a night. It does not remove a decayed nerve. A face that is swelling needs a same-day visit, not a second night of cloves.

In plain language

Tooth pain is often an inflamed nerve or a cavity that has reached it. Cold and sweets trigger it. Pain on biting can be a cracked tooth or an abscess. Swelling of the cheek, fever, or difficulty swallowing means the infection is leaving the tooth. That needs care. Clove oil on the gum is a old comfort and a poor plan if it delays the visit. Do not put aspirin on the gum. It burns the tissue.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

Pain with sweets or cold that lingers.
Pain that wakes you.
A swelling, a bad taste, or a loose tooth that is new.
A knocked-out tooth, or swelling that reaches the eye or the neck.

What usually sits underneath

Bacteria in a cavity inflame the pulp. The exit is through the root into the bone, which is why the face swells. Diabetes and a delayed visit make that spread more likely.

Care that is reasonable at home

Rinse with warm salt water if you can tolerate it.
Take only a painkiller that is safe for you, at the proper dose. If you have ulcers, kidney disease, or asthma, ask before using a common painkiller.
Keep the head raised to sleep.
See a dentist. Ask for an emergency slot if the face is swelling.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

Swelling of the face or floor of the mouth, fever, or trouble swallowing or breathing.
A tooth knocked out. Keep it in milk and come immediately.
Pain with chest pressure. Do not assume every jaw pain is dental.

Questions people ask

Will antibiotics alone save the tooth?

No. They may calm a spread of infection. The tooth still needs dental treatment.

Can I extract it at a camp without records?

Tell them your medicines, especially blood thinners and diabetes drugs. An extraction without that history can bleed.

Is a baby tooth important?

Yes. Infection and early loss affect the adult tooth. A child with face swelling should be seen.
