Breast changes that should be examined

Most lumps are not cancer. The only way to know is an examination, not a month of pressing the same spot every night.

In plain language

Breasts change with the cycle, with pregnancy, and with age. A new lump, skin that dimples, a nipple that newly turns in, or bloody discharge is assessed. Looking at yourself in the mirror with the arms raised, then feeling with flat fingers, once a month, is enough self-check. It does not replace a clinician if something is new.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

A lump that stays through a full cycle.
Skin like orange peel, or a rash of the nipple that does not heal.
One breast newly larger, or a nipple pulling in.
Discharge that is bloody or comes from one duct.

What usually sits underneath

Hormones make lumpy, tender tissue before a period. Cysts, fibroadenomas, and infections account for many visits. Cancer is the one we refuse to diagnose by reassurance alone when the features are new.

Care that is reasonable at home

Pick one date a month, after the period if you still bleed.
Do not pinch and prod all day. You will find normal tissue and lose sleep.
Note the size and site. A phone photo of the skin, not of a public post, helps if the dimple comes and goes.
Come in if it is new, growing, or associated with skin or nipple change.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

A lump with skin change or nipple inversion.
A red, hot breast with fever. Infection needs treatment, and sometimes it is not a simple infection.
Any new lump after menopause.

Questions people ask

Does a painful lump mean it is safe?

Pain makes cancer less likely. It does not make it impossible. Get it seen.

Is discharge always bad?

Milky discharge from both sides can be hormonal. Bloody or one-sided discharge should be checked.

How often is a mammogram?

It depends on age and risk. A self-found lump does not wait for that anniversary.
