Periods that do not keep a calendar
A cycle that moves by a few days is ordinary. A cycle that stops, floods, or arrives with a positive pregnancy chance is not a topic for group chat.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
The brain, thyroid, ovaries, and uterus share the calendar. Stress, weight change, thyroid disease, polycystic ovaries, and pregnancy are the frequent disruptors. Bleeding that is very heavy, or bleeding after menopause, is investigated. It is not ‘just hormones’ by default.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Do a pregnancy test if a period is late and pregnancy is possible, before you take any tablet to ‘bring it on’.
- Cycles longer than three months without a reason need a visit.
- Soaking through pads hourly, or bleeding with dizziness, is urgent.
- Pain on one side with a late period can be an ectopic pregnancy until proved otherwise.
What usually sits underneath
Ovulation is sensitive to illness, travel, exams, and rapid weight loss. The thyroid and prolactin can silence periods. Fibroids and polyps can make them heavy. Age near menopause makes them irregular in a different way.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Keep a simple date record for three months. Memory edits this.
- Do not take hormonal tablets borrowed from a friend to ‘regularise’.
- If you might be pregnant, avoid painkillers and hormones until a clinician has said pregnancy is not the issue.
- Maintain a steady meal pattern. Extreme dieting removes periods.
A pregnancy test is a urine test, not a feeling.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding.
- Very heavy bleeding, fainting, or a positive pregnancy test and shoulder-tip pain.
- Bleeding after menopause, or bleeding after sex that keeps happening.

Questions people ask
Is a late period always pregnancy?
No, but pregnancy is the one you must not miss. Test first.
Do I need an ultrasound every time?
Not for a single slightly late period with a negative test. Yes if pain, a mass, or a pregnancy complication is possible.
Can stress really stop periods?
Yes. It should still be a conclusion, not the opening assumption, if the gap is long.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
