PCOS: what daily life can change, and what it cannot
PCOS is a hormone pattern, not a sentence that you cannot have children, and not a label to put on every woman with a late period.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Diagnosis usually needs a combination of irregular ovulation, and either clinical or blood signs of higher androgens, after other causes are excluded. Ovaries that look polycystic on a scan are common and, by themselves, are not the syndrome. The practical issues are periods, skin and hair, weight, fertility when you want it, and a higher later risk of diabetes.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Irregular or absent periods.
- Acne or thicker facial hair that is new and progressive.
- Weight that sits on the waist and is hard to shift.
- Difficulty conceiving after a year of trying, or sooner if periods are very irregular.
What usually sits underneath
Insulin resistance often sits in the background. The ovaries then see a hormone mix that favours irregular eggs. Family patterns are common. It is not caused by one junk-food week.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Walk and strength work most days. Muscle improves the insulin problem.
- Build meals around dal, curd, eggs, or paneer plus vegetables, with a measured roti or rice.
- Treat sleep and snoring seriously. They worsen the insulin resistance.
- Ask before starting hormonal pills. They help many women and are wrong for some.
Plan pregnancy with a clinician if periods are rare. Waiting without ovulation wastes time.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Very heavy bleeding after a long gap, which can follow a thick lining.
- Severe pelvic pain or a positive pregnancy test with pain.
- Symptoms of very high sugar: thirst, weight loss, vomiting.

Questions people ask
Will I need IVF?
Many women with PCOS conceive with weight change, ovulation tracking, or simple ovulation medicines. IVF is not the starting point.
Must I give up gluten?
No. There is no PCOS law against wheat. There is a reason to limit sugary drinks and huge refined-starch portions.
Do contraceptive pills cause PCOS?
No. They are sometimes a treatment for the cycle and the acne. The syndrome is not created by the pill.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
