Calcium, vitamin D, and women’s bones
Bones do not send a letter before they thin. Women lose bone faster after menopause, and pregnancy and breastfeeding spend calcium that has to be replaced.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Calcium is stored in bone. Vitamin D is what lets the gut absorb it. Indoor life, covered skin, repeated pregnancies, and low dairy or millet intake leave many Indian women short. Tablets help when diet and sunlight are not enough, or when a scan or a fracture has already shown loss. Taking three calcium brands together is not ambition. It can raise urine calcium and upset the stomach.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Aches that you blame on housework.
- A fracture from a simple slip.
- Muscle cramps, which have many causes, not only calcium.
- No symptom, which is the usual state until a bone fails.
What usually sits underneath
Oestrogen protects bone. When it falls, bone leaves faster. Steroids, thyroid excess, smoking, and inactivity speed that up. Girls who never built peak bone because of poor food start the decline from a lower shelf.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Include curd, milk, paneer, or fortified alternatives, plus sesame, ragi, or greens you actually digest.
- Get daylight on forearms most days, without burning.
- Walk and carry ordinary loads such as shopping. Bone listens to impact and muscle.
- Separate calcium tablets from iron tablets by a couple of hours.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- A break after a minor fall.
- Severe back pain that is new in an older woman.
- Vomiting, confusion, and extreme thirst on high-dose supplements. That can be too much calcium or vitamin D.

Questions people ask
Does every woman need a tablet?
No. Food and activity come first. Tablets are for deficiency, pregnancy plans, or proven thin bone.
Is sunlight enough in Gurugram?
A short daily exposure helps many people. Pollution, indoor jobs, and covering clothes mean some still need a test and a course of vitamin D.
Can I take calcium with tea?
Tea is a poor partner for iron more than for calcium. Take calcium with a meal if it hurts an empty stomach.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
