Chest pain: which kind should not wait
Most chest pain in a clinic is not a heart attack. The problem is that the dangerous kind does not always look like the films.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Heart pain is often a pressure, heaviness, or burning in the centre of the chest. It may travel to the jaw, neck, or left arm, and it may come with sweat, nausea, or breathlessness. Acid, muscle strain, and anxiety can copy parts of that picture, which is why Google is a bad referee.
Signs worth noticing
The safe rule is simple: new pressure in the chest, especially with sweat or breathlessness, is an emergency until a clinician says otherwise.
- Pain that appears on climbing stairs and eases with rest is a classic warning, even if it is only a few minutes.
- Pain that is sharp, worse when you press the rib, and gone when you change position is more often the chest wall.
- Burning after a late oily meal can be acidity. Burning with cold sweat is not a time to take an antacid and sleep.
- Women and people with diabetes sometimes feel breathlessness, unusual fatigue, or nausea more than dramatic pain.
What usually sits underneath
A narrowed heart artery, a clot, acid reflux, a pulled muscle, a lung problem, and panic can all live in the same part of the body. Age, smoking, diabetes, and a family history of early heart disease raise the chance that the heart is involved.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Stop activity and sit. Loosen tight clothes.
- If the pain is pressure-like, new, or comes with sweat or breathing trouble, call for emergency help. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint.
- Chewing a tablet you were already prescribed for heart disease is different from starting a stranger’s medicine. Only take what a doctor has told you to take for this exact situation.
- After any suspected heart pain, you need an ECG while the story is fresh, not next month.
Do not walk it off to prove you are fine. A normal ECG later does not erase a dangerous episode that was never recorded.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Chest pressure lasting more than a few minutes, with sweat, vomiting, or breathlessness.
- Fainting, or pain plus a feeling that you might collapse.
- Known heart disease and pain that is worse than your usual angina.
How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in

Questions people ask
Can acidity feel like a heart attack?
Yes. That overlap is why new chest pressure should be seen, not argued about at home.
Is left-arm pain always the heart?
No. Shoulder and neck strain are common. The company it keeps — sweat, nausea, exertion — matters more than the side.
What should I bring?
Old ECGs, the list of medicines, and a person who can explain what happened if you feel too unwell to talk.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
