Ear buds, wax, and the itch they make worse

Wax is a cleaner, not a dirt. A bud pushes it against the drum and then you are deafer than when you started.

In plain language

The canal is self-cleaning. Wax moves outward. Buds, pins, and keys interrupt that and can scratch the skin or perforate the drum. A blocked feeling, with normal hearing returning after a yawn, is often the tube from the nose, not wax. True wax blockage muffles hearing and sometimes causes a cough or a dizziness when the wax touches the drum. Removal is done by someone who can see the canal.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

What usually sits underneath

Skin oil plus shed skin equals wax. It is antibacterial. Removing all of it causes dry, itchy canals that people then attack with more buds. Hearing aids and earplugs push wax in, so those users need a planned look.

Care that is reasonable at home

Stop the buds.
If a clinician has said it is wax, use the softening drops exactly as directed, then get it removed.
Do not syringe your own ear, and do not let a untrained person do it.
Treat itch by leaving the canal alone. A drop, if needed, should be prescribed.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

Pain, discharge, bleeding, or dizziness after cleaning.
A sudden hearing loss.
A foreign body, especially a battery. That is urgent.
