Falls at home after sixty
A fall is not a normal part of ageing to be shrugged at. It is often the start of a hip fracture, a head injury, or a loss of confidence that stops the person walking at all.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Poor vision, slippery floors, blood-pressure tablets that drop the pressure on standing, weak thighs, and uneven chappals are the usual combination. Getting up at night without a light is the usual time. After a fall, groin pain or a leg that looks short can be a hip fracture even if the person can hobble. A bang on the head, even a mild one, can bleed slowly. Watch for headache and confusion over the next day.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- The person tripped on a mat they have tripped on before.
- Dizziness on standing.
- They have stopped going out because of fear of falling.
- They hit their head, or they cannot get up, or one leg will not take weight.
What usually sits underneath
Balance is a team effort of ears, eyes, nerves, and muscle. Remove one, add a dark room, and the floor arrives. Some medicines add dizziness. Removing a medicine without advice can also cause a fall, if the illness it treated comes back.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Light the path to the toilet. A plug-in night light is enough.
- Remove loose rugs. Put a rubber mat in the bathroom.
- Review medicines with a clinician, especially sleeping tablets.
- Keep walking. Fear of falling, if it ends all walking, makes the next fall more likely.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Inability to bear weight, a short or turned-out leg, or head injury.
- Confusion, vomiting, or severe headache after a fall.
- Chest pain or blackout as the cause of the fall. The fall is then the clue, not the disease.
How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in
Come to OPD after any fall that caused pain or a blackout. Bring the medicine list. We would rather see a bruise than miss a fracture. OPD runs Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at Near Rockford School, Anaj Mandi Chowk, Kadipur Road, Shakti Park, Sector 10A, Gurugram, Haryana. Call 98185 48492 or 70423 28047. There is no appointment form on this website.
Questions people ask
Should they stay in bed after a fall?
Only until a painful injury is assessed. Prolonged bed rest causes the next weakness.
Are walkers a failure?
No. A proper stick or walker is a tool. A broken one, or a stick that is too tall, is a hazard.
Can blood pressure tablets cause falls?
Some drop the pressure on standing. Do not stop them. Ask for a review.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
