Memory changes: what is age and what is not
Misplacing keys is common. Getting lost on a familiar road, or leaving a gas flame on, is not a joke about age.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Normal ageing slows recall. The person finds the word later. Dementia affects daily life: money, cooking, dressing, and navigation. It is not ‘just old age’, and some causes, such as thyroid disease, vitamin B12 deficiency, depression, and medicine side effects, are treatable. A sudden confusion over hours or days is not dementia. It is a medical emergency until infection, stroke, or a salt imbalance is ruled out.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Forgetting a name and recalling it later.
- Repeating the same question and not remembering the conversation.
- Accusations of theft that follow lost objects.
- Sudden confusion, a one-sided weakness, or a person who is newly drowsy.
What usually sits underneath
Alzheimer’s disease and small strokes are common causes of true dementia. Hearing loss and depression imitate it. A hearing aid or a treated depression can look like the memory ‘came back’. Alcohol and sleeping tablets make nights worse and days foggy.
Care that is reasonable at home
- See a clinician early. A baseline matters.
- Check hearing and vision. A person who cannot hear will not follow.
- Keep medicines supervised. A pill box beats memory.
- Do not argue with a false memory for an hour. Keep the person safe and the stove supervised.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Sudden confusion. Think infection, stroke, or medicines.
- Wandering, a fire risk, or not eating.
- A fall with a head injury, then a change in alertness.

Questions people ask
Is it genetic?
Family history raises risk. It does not make the diagnosis. The person’s own function decides.
Will a brain game app help?
It is harmless and usually not enough. Walking, blood pressure, hearing, and company do more.
Should I correct them?
Correct a dangerous mistake, such as a medicine. Do not hold a trial about what they ate yesterday.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
