Knee pain that stairs make worse
Stair pain is the classic complaint of a worn or overloaded knee. It is not a reason to stop walking forever, and it is not something to inject because a camp offered a discount.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
The knee takes several times your body weight on stairs. Extra weight, weak thigh muscles, old cartilage injury, and arthritis all protest there first. A knee that locks, gives way, or swells after a twist is a mechanical problem and should be examined. A knee that aches after a long day and settles with rest is often strength and load.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Pain is on both stairs, worse coming down.
- Morning stiffness lasts a few minutes, not half the day.
- The knee locks or swells suddenly after a twist.
- Night pain that is new and in one spot, especially if you also feel unwell.
What usually sits underneath
Cartilage thins with age and load. The thigh muscle, if weak, lets the kneecap track badly. Inflammatory arthritis is a different illness: prolonged stiffness, other joints, and sometimes fever.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Keep walking on flat ground. Stopping all movement makes the thigh weaker and the pain worse.
- Sit-to-stand practice builds the muscle that protects the knee. Ten slow repetitions count.
- Lose even a little waist size if you carry extra weight. The knee feels it first.
- Avoid deep squats and long sitting on the floor if those reliably flare the pain.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- A locked knee, or a knee you cannot stand on after injury.
- A hot, swollen joint with fever.
- Pain with calf swelling, which may be a clot rather than the knee.
How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in
OPD can separate a mechanical knee from infection or inflammation and tell you whether an X-ray will change the plan. OPD runs Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at Near Rockford School, Anaj Mandi Chowk, Kadipur Road, Shakti Park, Sector 10A, Gurugram, Haryana. Call 98185 48492 or 70423 28047. Questions people ask
Do I need an MRI?
Often no. Examination and a plain X-ray answer the first questions. MRI is for specific mechanical stories.
Is walking harmful?
Flat walking is usually helpful. Pain that sharpens and limps you should be reviewed, not pushed.
Will oil and massage cure arthritis?
They soothe. They do not rebuild cartilage. Use them as comfort, not as the whole plan.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
