Hot flushes and the years around menopause
Menopause is the end of periods, confirmed by time, not by a mood. The years before it are often the bumpy part.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Falling oestrogen causes flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and a faster loss of bone. Periods become irregular and then stop. Mood and sleep suffer for many women, and not because they are being difficult. After a full year without periods, any bleeding needs assessment. It is not a last period returning for fun.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- A flush that wakes you, then a chill.
- Joint aches and a sleep pattern that falls apart.
- Dryness and discomfort with sex.
- Bleeding between periods, or any bleeding a year after they stopped.
What usually sits underneath
The ovaries retire. The body is not ill by default, but blood pressure, cholesterol, and bone density all deserve a fresh look because their risks rise in the same decade.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Dress in layers. Keep the bedroom cool. Reduce evening alcohol and very spicy food if they trigger flushes.
- Walk and include some strength work for bone.
- Ask about vaginal moisturisers or prescribed local oestrogen if dryness is the main problem.
- Discuss hormone therapy with a clinician if flushes are wrecking sleep. It is an option with rules, not a trend to start from a reel.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Bleeding after menopause.
- Bleeding so heavy you feel faint.
- Chest pain, one-sided weakness, or a breast lump. Menopause does not explain those.

Questions people ask
At what age is this normal?
Often around the late forties or early fifties. Periods stopping before 40, or starting again after they had stopped, should be seen.
Will soy cure it?
Food is food. It is not a reliable treatment for severe flushes.
Do I still need cervical screening?
Yes, on the schedule you were given. Menopause does not end that.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
