Neck pain from the phone

The head is heavy. Holding it forward for an hour to watch a reel is a load the neck was not asked to carry all evening.

This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.

In plain language

Neck strain from screens is an ache at the base of the skull and across the shoulders, worse at the end of the day, better when you lie down. Pain that shoots into the arm, with tingling or a weak grip, may be a nerve. Pain with fever, or after a crash, is not a posture story.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

What usually sits underneath

Muscles at the back of the neck fatigue. Joints of the neck, already wearing with age, complain when they are held at the end of their range. A disc can press a nerve and send pain below the elbow.

Care that is reasonable at home

  1. Raise the phone to eye level instead of dropping the chin.
  2. Take a break every twenty minutes. Roll the shoulders, do not whip the neck in circles.
  3. Sleep with one modest pillow, not a stack.
  4. Strengthen the upper back by squeezing the shoulder blades, a few times a day.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in

If the pain is only postural we would rather you change the phone habit than buy a collar. If the arm is involved, come for an examination. OPD runs Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at Near Rockford School, Anaj Mandi Chowk, Kadipur Road, Shakti Park, Sector 10A, Gurugram, Haryana. Call 98185 48492 or 70423 28047. There is no appointment form on this website.

Questions people ask

Should I wear a collar?

Almost never for simple phone neck. Collars weaken the muscles you need.

Do I need an X-ray?

Not for a short ache without arm symptoms or injury. Age-related changes on X-ray are common and often irrelevant.

Will exercises hurt?

Gentle movement should not send electric pain down the arm. If it does, stop and get seen.

If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
