Planning a pregnancy before the test turns positive
The baby’s spine is forming before many women know they are pregnant. Preparation is the visit that happens while you still feel ordinary.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
A planned pregnancy lets you start folic acid, check thyroid and haemoglobin, control sugar and pressure, and stop medicines that are unsafe. Rubella immunity, thyroid disease, and epilepsy medicines are classic examples where the plan must change before conception, not after a positive test. Weight, tobacco, and alcohol are easier to fix before the nausea starts.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- You feel well, which is the right time.
- Periods that are very irregular, so ovulation is hard to time.
- A long-term medicine you cannot simply throw away, such as for epilepsy, pressure, or thyroid.
- Previous pregnancy loss or a previous caesarean. The story changes the plan.
What usually sits underneath
Folate deficiency raises the chance of neural-tube defects. Uncontrolled sugar and thyroid disease raise other risks. Starting the right tablet and stopping the wrong one is the whole point of this visit.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Start folic acid when you decide to try, on a clinician’s advice.
- List every medicine, including acne tablets and herbal mixes.
- Get thyroid and haemoglobin checked if they have never been done.
- Stop alcohol and tobacco. Reduce them is not the brief.
If you have diabetes or high pressure, get those stable first.
When waiting is a bad idea
- A positive test with bleeding or one-sided pain.
- Vomiting so severe you cannot keep water down, once pregnant.
- Any medicine you now realise is unsafe. Call rather than stopping an epilepsy drug on your own.

Questions people ask
How long should we try before asking for help?
Often a year if you are under 35 and periods are regular, sooner if you are older or periods are rare.
Do both partners prepare?
Yes. Tobacco, alcohol, and some illnesses in the father matter too.
Is folic acid enough?
It is the starting tablet, not the whole plan. Thyroid, sugar, and unsafe medicines still need a look.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
