The first weeks after birth
The baby gets visitors. The mother needs food, sleep, a pad check, and someone who asks how her mood actually is.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Bleeding tapers over days to weeks. It should not soak a pad in minutes or come with dizziness. Pain in the abdomen that worsens, fever, a red swollen breast, or a calf that is hot and one-sided needs a clinician. Tear and caesarean wounds should look drier and calmer each day, not redder. Mood swings are common. Inability to sleep even when the baby sleeps, or thoughts of harm, is an illness and is treatable.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Heavy bleeding or clots larger than you were told to expect.
- Fever, foul discharge, or a wound that opens or smells.
- A painful, hot breast with fever.
- Headache with visual change, especially if blood pressure was high in pregnancy.
What usually sits underneath
The uterus is shrinking, milk is arriving, and hormones are dropping. Blood loss at birth may have left you anaemic. None of that is helped by starving ‘to warm the body’ or by heavy traditional restrictions that remove protein.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Eat normal food, including dal, vegetables, and iron-rich meals.
- Keep the perineum clean and dry. Wash hands before feeds.
- Share the night in shifts if a second adult exists. Sleep is treatment.
- Ask for a mood check if joy never comes or you feel hollow and frightened.
Bleeding that soaks pads hourly, or fainting.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Chest pain, breathlessness, or a seizure.
- A red, painful calf, or a severe headache.
- Come back if the discharge, the wound, or the mood is wrong. Bring the discharge summary from the birth.

Questions people ask
When can I climb stairs?
If the birth was uncomplicated, ordinary slow stairs are usually fine. Pain is the limit. After a caesarean, follow the restriction you were given.
Is sadness normal?
A few weepy days can be. Two weeks of low mood, or any scary thoughts, should be told to a clinician.
What about bleeding that stopped and restarted?
A small return can be hormonal. Heavy fresh bleeding should be seen.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
