Anxiety that shows up as a body symptom
A racing heart, a lump in the throat, and a fear of dying can be panic. They can also be the heart, the thyroid, or asthma. The first severe episode should be seen, not labelled by a relative.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Panic arrives fast, peaks within minutes, and leaves you exhausted. Breathing becomes shallow, fingers tingle, and the chest feels tight. The body is not pretending. Adrenaline is real. Once dangerous causes have been considered, the treatment is explanation, breathing that is slow rather than deep-gasping, and, when needed, therapy or medicine. Repeated emergency visits without a plan are miserable.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- A surge that peaks and then eases, with a fear that feels larger than the situation.
- Tingling in both hands and around the mouth after fast breathing.
- Chest pain with sweat on exertion. That is not the moment to call it anxiety.
- A first episode. It deserves an examination.
What usually sits underneath
The brain’s alarm is oversensitive. It fires for a thought, a closed room, or sometimes for nothing you can name. Avoidance makes the alarm bigger. The bedroom you refuse, the bus you stop taking, the life that shrinks: that is the illness growing.
Care that is reasonable at home
- During a surge, sit, and breathe out slowly. Do not gasp large breaths. That worsens the tingling.
- Put both feet on the floor and name five ordinary objects you can see.
- Reduce tea and energy drinks. They are fuel for a twitchy alarm.
- If episodes are repeating, ask for a plan. ‘It is just anxiety’ without a plan is not care.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Chest pressure on exertion, fainting, or breathlessness that is not just a minute of panic.
- Thoughts of suicide or of harming someone.
- Confusion, one-sided weakness, or a panic story that does not fully return to normal.
How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in

Questions people ask
Will an ECG be normal?
Often yes in panic, which is reassuring after a proper look. A normal ECG does not erase a story that was actually the heart. The history decides.
Should I avoid the situations?
Short rest is fine. Permanent avoidance is how the world gets smaller. Treatment aims the other way.
Are medicines forever?
Not always. Some people need them for a period, some need therapy, some need both. That is a clinical decision.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
