The tiredness of the person looking after everyone
The patient has a diagnosis. The person cooking, bathing, and sleeping lightly does not, and is often closer to falling over.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Caring for a parent, a child with illness, or a spouse after a stroke is work. It removes sleep, wages, and friends. Irritability, resentment, and a body that is always slightly ill are signals, not moral failures. Caregivers develop high blood pressure and depression at higher rates. A roster and one afternoon off are medical equipment.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- You snap at a small thing and then feel ashamed.
- You cannot remember the last full night.
- Your own medicines are finishing and you have not noticed.
- You have thoughts of harming yourself or the person you care for. Say this out loud to a clinician. It is a crisis, not a confession to hide.
What usually sits underneath
Constant vigilance keeps stress hormones up. Grief for the person as they used to be sits beside the practical work. Families that ‘do not believe in outsiders’ concentrate the load on one daughter-in-law or one spouse.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Write the week down and mark one block that another person will cover. Be specific.
- Keep your own blood pressure and sugar appointments. A fallen caregiver helps nobody.
- Sleep in a different room for one night if the monitoring can be handed over.
- Join one other family in the same situation if you can find them. Isolation makes the load feel unique. It is not.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Thoughts of suicide or of harm.
- Your own chest pain, fainting, or a blood pressure that is suddenly very high.
- Abuse in the house, in either direction. Tell a clinician.

Questions people ask
Is it selfish to rest?
No. Fatigue causes mistakes in medicines and falls. Rest is part of safe care.
What if nobody else will help?
A paid helper for two hours, a neighbour, or a day-care arrangement may exist. Ask the hospital desk what families usually do locally. Even a partial answer helps.
Should I take a tonic?
You should take sleep and a real meal. A tonic is not the missing piece.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
