Stress that has moved into your sleep
A bad week ruins a few nights. Months of lying awake, dreading the next day, is a health problem. It raises pressure, appetite, and irritability.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Stress keeps the body in a light state of alarm. The mind reviews the day at the exact hour it needed to power down. Caffeine after late afternoon, a phone in the bed, and a nap that eats the evening all add to it. Sleep medicines borrowed from a parent are a poor plan. They confuse older people and do not fix the alarm.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- You fall asleep, then wake at 3 am and start planning.
- The body is tired and the mind is loud.
- You sleep all Sunday and still feel unwell on Monday. That pattern needs a broader look.
- Snoring with pauses, which is a breathing problem, not only stress.
What usually sits underneath
The brain treats unfinished threat as more important than rest. Over time the bed itself becomes the cue for waking. That is why ‘trying harder’ in bed fails.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Leave the bed if you have been awake for a long stretch. Sit somewhere dim and boring until you are sleepy.
- Keep one wake time, including Sundays.
- Put the phone to charge outside the room.
- Cut the late tea. Write tomorrow’s list before dinner so the mind is not holding it at midnight.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Insomnia for months, or sleep loss with low mood, panic, or thoughts of self-harm.
- Sleepiness while driving.
- A sudden total inability to sleep in someone who was well, especially with confusion.

Questions people ask
Should I nap?
A short early-afternoon nap can be fine. A two-hour evening nap steals the night.
Is warm milk useful?
It is a ritual, not a drug. Rituals help if the rest of the routine exists.
Do I need a sleep study?
Only if the story suggests apnea or another physical sleep disorder. Most stress insomnia does not start with a study.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
