A breathing practice that is small enough to do
Slow breathing is a skill, not a personality. It will not pay a debt or treat severe depression. It can take the edge off a surge of adrenaline.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
When you gasp, you blow off carbon dioxide and your fingers tingle, which frightens you more. The useful move is a longer breath out. Try breathing in through the nose for a comfortable count, and out for a slightly longer count, for a few minutes. Shoulders stay down. If you feel dizzy, stop and breathe normally. People with severe asthma or panic that this exercise worsens should not force it.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- A surge of anxiety while you are otherwise safe.
- Tingling that follows fast breathing and settles when the breathing slows.
- Chest pain on exertion. Do not treat that with a breathing app.
- A asthma attack. Use the inhaler, not a breathing exercise, as the first step.
What usually sits underneath
Longer exhales raise the influence of the nerve that calms the heart rate. The effect is modest and immediate. Practised daily, it becomes available when you need it. It is a part of care for anxiety, beside sleep, therapy, and sometimes medicine.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Practise once a day when you are calm, so the skill exists.
- Use it in a queue, before a result, or in bed.
- Do not aim for huge breaths. Small and slow is the point.
- Stop if you feel faint. Sit down.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Chest pain, severe breathlessness, or fainting.
- A panic that is new and not yet examined.
- Thoughts of self-harm. Breathing is not the response to that.
How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in

Questions people ask
How many minutes?
Five is plenty to start. Consistency beats a twenty-minute performance you abandon.
Should the stomach move?
A gentle belly rise is fine. Theatrical breathing is unnecessary.
Can children do it?
Older children can learn a longer breath out. Do not force a frightened child into an exercise. Comfort comes first.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
