Getting blood pressure checked before it hurts you
High blood pressure has no symptom you can trust. The cuff is the symptom.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
A reading at a noisy camp, taken over a sleeve, is a screening moment. It is not a diagnosis and not a reason to refuse treatment if careful readings are high. Adults should know their numbers. People with diabetes, kidney disease, or a previous heart problem should know them better. Home monitoring is useful when a clinician has asked for it, with a machine that fits your arm.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- You have no idea of your usual reading.
- A camp slip that scared you.
- Headaches you are blaming on pressure without ever measuring it.
- Pregnancy. Check on the schedule you are given, and urgently if you have headache or swelling of the face.
What usually sits underneath
Pressure damages arteries, heart, kidneys, and eyes whether or not it causes a headache. The damage is slow, which is why people postpone the cuff. The tablet, if needed, is dull and effective.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Ask for a check at any OPD visit, even if you came for a cough.
- If a reading is high, repeat it after five quiet minutes before you tell the family.
- Buy a home machine only if you will use it calmly, not every hour.
- Bring the machine in once so it can be compared with the clinic cuff.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- A very high reading with chest pain, breathlessness, weakness, or confusion.
- Pregnancy with headache, visual change, or swelling.
- A home machine that reads errors or gives wild numbers. Do not make medicine changes from it.

Questions people ask
What number is high?
Repeated readings at or above 140/90 in clinic are generally called high in adults, but targets differ if you have other diseases. One number is not the whole decision.
Can I stop tablets if I feel fine?
No. Feeling fine is what untreated pressure feels like, until it does not.
Does a digital machine count?
Yes, if the cuff is the right size and you sit correctly. Wrist machines are less reliable.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
