The health check that is worth doing

A useful check looks at blood pressure, sugar, weight, tobacco, and the story of your family. A brochure of forty tests is not more careful. It is more expensive.

This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.

In plain language

For a well adult, the core is pressure, a sugar test, a look at weight and waist, and a conversation about tobacco, alcohol, and mood. Cholesterol joins the list when age or family history justifies it. Women need their cervical and breast screening on schedule. Men and women over the right age need the cancer conversations that apply to them. Vitamin panels, full-body scans, and ‘cancer marker’ blood tests in a healthy person create fear more often than health.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

What usually sits underneath

Most serious lifestyle disease is silent at the start. A check finds pressure and sugar while they are still cheap to treat. It does not find every cancer, and no package should promise that.

Care that is reasonable at home

  1. Get pressure checked even in a year when you do nothing else.
  2. Take the same list of medicines and old reports.
  3. Ask, of any test, ‘what will we do if this is abnormal?’ If the answer is a shrug, skip it.
  4. Book the review, not only the blood draw. A number without a person is how reports end up in a drawer.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

Questions people ask

How often?

Pressure can be checked yearly if it has been normal, more often if it is high. Sugar and cholesterol follow your risk. Your clinician can set the interval in one sentence.

Should I fast?

Only for the tests that require it. Ask when you book so you are not sent home.

Are full-body MRI packages wise?

In a person without symptoms, they often find incidentals that lead to more tests and anxiety. They are not a substitute for the basic check.

If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
