What to feed a child who eats two bites
Children eat like children. The job is a decent week, not a perfect thali photographed at lunch.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Growth needs calories plus protein and iron. A diet of biscuits, juice, and one bite of roti fails that even if the child looks busy. Offer dal, curd, egg, paneer, khichdi, vegetables they will actually swallow, and fruit instead of juice. Milk is food, but a bottle all day kills appetite for everything else.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- A child who is active and follows their own growth curve.
- A child who is tired, pale, or falling off the curve.
- Constipation from a diet of maida snacks and almost no water.
- Picky eating that is really a bottle of milk every hour.
What usually sits underneath
Appetite follows growth spurts and slumps. Iron deficiency makes appetite worse. Forcing a spoon teaches the child that meals are a battle. A parent’s job is the offer, the timing, and the absence of endless biscuits.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Seat the child. Eat together. Twenty minutes is a meal. Two hours is a hostage situation.
- Keep milk to the amount your paediatric clinician suggested, not a free tap.
- Put one familiar food on the plate beside one newer food.
- Skip juice. It is sugar with a reputation.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Weight loss, or a child who is too tired to play.
- Difficulty swallowing, or food that is regularly choked on.
- A huge belly, pale eyes, or worms seen in the stool.

Questions people ask
What if they refuse vegetables?
Keep offering a small amount without a speech. Mix grated vegetable into dal or paratha, and keep fruit visible.
Are health drinks necessary?
Most are sweet powders. Food is cheaper and clearer. Ask before you spend on a tub.
How many eggs?
Often one a day is fine for a child who eats eggs. Allergy and family pattern can change that.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
