A vaccine is a rehearsal for the immune system. The disease it prevents is the performance you do not want.

This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.

In plain language

India’s schedule covers illnesses that still kill or disable children: measles, whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus, polio, rotavirus, pneumonia germs, and others. The card is the record. A missed date is caught up, not cancelled. A mild fever or a sore leg after a dose is common. A high fever, a fit, or inconsolable crying is a reason to call.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

Bring the card even if you think a dose was missed.
A fever the evening of the vaccine, with a child who still drinks.
A limp that is actually a sore injection leg.
Hives, swelling of the face, or breathing trouble after a dose. That is urgent.

What usually sits underneath

Vaccines show the immune system a piece or a weakened form of the germ. The system learns without taking the full risk of the disease. Delaying because of a runny nose is sometimes unnecessary. A clinician can say whether today’s cough is a reason to wait a week.

Care that is reasonable at home

Keep the card in a plastic sleeve with the birth papers.
Ask at every visit, ‘what is due, and what is late?’
Give the pain dose you were advised if the leg is sore. Do not invent a mix.
If a dose was missed during travel, come for catch-up. Shame is not a medical plan.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

Breathing difficulty, collapse, or widespread rash after a vaccine.
A fit.
Fever in a very young baby, whether or not a vaccine was given that week.

Questions people ask

Do vaccines cause the disease?

The vaccines in the routine programme do not give the child the wild disease. Mild symptoms can be the immune response.

Is one missed visit a disaster?

No. Catch-up exists. The disaster is never returning.

Are extra paid vaccines compulsory?

The government schedule covers the essential set. Some additional vaccines are discussed individually. Ask, and do not buy a package out of fear.
