Coughs and colds that fill a classroom
A cough that lasts a week is miserable and usually viral. A cough with fast breathing is a different illness.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Most colds are viruses. The nose runs, the cough lingers after the fever has gone, and antibiotics do not speed that up. Honey can soothe a cough in children over one year. Honey is forbidden under one year. Steam that burns a child in your lap is not treatment. Watch the chest: fast breathing, indrawing under the ribs, or a noise with every breath needs a clinician.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Fever for a couple of days, then a wet cough.
- A child who still plays.
- Wheeze or a bark that is worse at night.
- Blue lips, pauses in breathing, or a chest that sucks in.
What usually sits underneath
Viruses inflame the airway. The cough is the clearing, and it can last two or three weeks. Bacterial pneumonia is less common and looks sicker. Asthma and wheeze can be set off by the same virus.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Fluids, rest, and a clear nose before feeds in infants.
- Saline drops, not a cocktail of three cough syrups.
- Honey at night only if the child is older than one.
- Keep the child home while feverish so the class does not share it.
Do not use adult cough syrups or leftover antibiotics.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Fast or laboured breathing, grunting, or blue colour.
- Poor drinking, fewer wet nappies, or unusual sleepiness.
- A cough that lasts beyond a few weeks, or comes with weight loss.

Questions people ask
Why is the cough worse at night?
Lying down and dry air. Prop the head end slightly for older children, and keep the room free of smoke.
Is a noisy chest always pneumonia?
No. Wheeze and mucus rattle. Fast breathing and indrawing are the signs that need eyes on the child.
Can they bathe?
A quick warm bath is fine if the child is otherwise okay. Do not take a feverish child out into cold air with wet hair.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
