Exam stress in a teenager
A teenager who is revising and irritable is ordinary. A teenager who has stopped sleeping, eating, or seeing any future is not ordinary and needs a clinician.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Exams raise pressure and shorten sleep. Some anxiety improves performance. Anxiety that produces panic, vomiting, or a blank mind in every test is an illness. Parents help by protecting sleep, feeding a real meal, and dropping comparisons with a cousin. They harm by sitting up to police revision until 2 am. The brain consolidates memory during sleep. The extra hour of panicked reading is often a loss.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Worried, still eating, still able to joke sometimes.
- Sleep pushed later, but present.
- Panic attacks, or a refusal to enter the exam.
- Talk of being better off gone, or self-harm.
What usually sits underneath
The brain under threat cannot file memory. Caffeine and energy drinks worsen the jitter. A household that treats marks as the only measure of the child adds a second illness on top of a syllabus.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Keep a fixed sleep time in the last fortnight.
- One outdoors walk a day. The chapter will still be there in twenty minutes.
- Sit a short practice paper at the time of day the real paper will happen.
- If panic is already severe, see a clinician early. The week of the exam is a bad time to start that conversation.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Self-harm, suicidal talk, or a teenager who is not sleeping at all.
- Fainting, chest pain, or a panic that does not settle.
- A child who has stopped eating.

Questions people ask
Should they skip the exam?
Usually no, if they are safe and a plan exists. Sometimes yes, if a clinician says they are too ill. That is a medical call.
Are tonics useful?
Sleep and breakfast outperform tonics. Do not give someone else’s sedative the night before.
How do I talk about marks?
Ask about effort and health. Tell them the household survives a disappointing result. Mean it.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
