A parent had a heart attack young. What now?
A father who had a heart attack at 50 is useful information. It is not a verdict on your own fortieth birthday.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Early heart disease in a parent or sibling — often taken as before 55 in men and before 65 in women — raises your risk more than a distant uncle’s illness in old age. The response is earlier attention to pressure, sugar, cholesterol, tobacco, and waist size. It is not a yearly angiogram for a person with no symptoms.
Signs worth noticing
Write down who was affected, at what age, and whether they smoked. Fuzzy family stories lead to fuzzy plans.
- You feel well. Family history is about prevention, not about inventing symptoms.
- Chest pain on effort is a symptom, not a family story. Treat it as its own problem.
- Very high cholesterol in several relatives can be a specific inherited condition. Mention the numbers if you know them.
- A sibling with diabetes also matters. Sugar and heart disease travel together.
What usually sits underneath
Genes set a background. Tobacco, central weight, untreated pressure, and diabetes decide a large part of what actually happens. You cannot edit your parents. You can refuse the beedi and keep the waist from growing.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Get pressure, sugar, and a cholesterol panel checked earlier than a person with a quiet family tree.
- Stop tobacco completely. Cutting down is not the same claim.
- Walk and protect sleep. These are dull and effective.
- Tell every new clinician the family story in one sentence so it enters the file.
Do not buy a calcium-score package because an advertisement frightened you. Start with the basic tests and a conversation.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Any exertional chest pressure, whatever your family history.
- Sudden death in a close young relative. Mention it; some families need a more specific assessment.
- Cholesterol that is extremely high on a first test. That should not wait a year.

Questions people ask
Does family history mean I need medicines now?
Not by itself. Medicines follow your own numbers and overall risk.
What if I do not know the ages?
Say so. A vague story is still worth recording, with that uncertainty attached.
Should my children be tested?
Healthy children do not need adult heart packages. Teach them food and activity. Ask a paediatric clinic if a parent has a known inherited cholesterol disorder.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
