Flu season in a household
Flu is not a moral failure of the person who brought it home from the office. It is a virus that likes closed rooms and unwashed hands.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Influenza causes sudden fever, body ache, cough, and exhaustion. Most adults recover with rest and fluids. It is harsher in pregnant women, older adults, infants, and people with heart or lung disease. They should be seen earlier. Antibiotics do not treat flu. A antiviral is sometimes used, early, in high-risk people. The household plan is simpler: the ill person coughs into a tissue or an elbow, washes hands, and does not cook for everyone while febrile.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Sudden fever and aches, worse than a usual cold.
- A cough that follows.
- Breathlessness, chest pain, or a fever that returns after improving.
- A baby, a pregnant woman, or an older person who looks weak.
What usually sits underneath
Droplets and hands carry it. A office with shut windows in winter is an efficient machine. The vaccine, offered before the season to people who need it, reduces severe illness. It does not make you invincible.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Stay home while febrile.
- Air the room for a few minutes if the outside air is not itself hazardous.
- Do not share bottles.
- Ask about the flu vaccine if you are pregnant, older, or have heart or lung disease, before the season rather than during the fever.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Breathlessness, blue lips, or chest pain.
- A child breathing fast, or an older person who is confused.
- Dehydration, or a fever that is not following the expected course.

Questions people ask
Should we all take the same syrup?
No. Most of the household may not get ill. Those who do mostly need rest and fluids.
How long am I infectious?
Roughly while you have fever and a bit beyond. Ask if you work with patients or with food.
Is the vaccine the same as a cold injection?
The flu vaccine is specific. A random immunity booster is not that vaccine.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
