Handwashing that actually removes germs
A quick rinse without soap, followed by wiping on a dirty dupatta, is not handwashing. Twenty seconds with soap, at the right moments, is one of the few habits that genuinely cuts diarrhoea and respiratory illness.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
The moments are: after the toilet, after cleaning a child, before cooking, before eating, and after coughing into your hands. Soap lifts the film that holds germs. Sanitiser with enough alcohol is a backup when hands are not visibly dirty and soap is impossible. It does not work well on hands covered in dal or mud. Nails that are long and decorated hold more grime. A shared towel that stays damp is a way to put the germs back.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Someone in the house has loose motions.
- You handle food for other people.
- A new baby is due or has arrived.
- You think a sanitiser bottle replaces cleaning a visibly soiled hand. It does not.
What usually sits underneath
Most gut infections travel on hands, not on a dramatic contaminated well. Respiratory viruses travel on hands and on surfaces people then touch. The intervention is boring, which is why it is skipped.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Keep soap at the sink you actually use, not a guest soap in a drawer.
- Wash for the time it takes to sing a short line you know.
- Dry on a clean cloth or air. Change the cloth.
- Teach children the toilet moment. Model it. They copy what you do after you leave the bathroom.
Handwashing does not treat an illness you already have. It prevents the next one.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Broken skin on the hands of a person handling food. Cover it.
- A sanitiser that is being drunk by a child. Store it. That poisoning is an emergency.
- A outbreak of loose motions in the house. Add extra care with water and food, and see the people who are drying out.
How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in
This is the advice we would like every family to have practised before they need the hospital. If someone is already ill, come. Do not send soap as a substitute for a dehydrated child. OPD runs Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at Near Rockford School, Anaj Mandi Chowk, Kadipur Road, Shakti Park, Sector 10A, Gurugram, Haryana. Call 98185 48492 or 70423 28047. There is no appointment form on this website.
Questions people ask
Does hot water matter?
Comfortably warm or cold both work if the soap and the time are real.
Are antibacterial soaps better?
Ordinary soap is enough. Antibacterial products are not required for home use.
What about gloves in the kitchen?
Gloves that are not changed become dirtier than hands. Washing is the standard.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
