Malaria, viral fever, and the fever you should test

A fever with shaking chills is a reason to test for malaria in season, not a reason to start an antimalarial from a chemist.

In plain language

Malaria is spread by mosquitoes and causes fever that can swing, with chills, headache, and body ache. The useful test looks for the parasite. One negative test very early does not always finish the question if the person is still ill. Dengue, typhoid, and a ordinary virus overlap. Antibiotics and antimalarials are not interchangeable. Severe malaria — confusion, repeated vomiting, dark urine, breathlessness — is an emergency.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

Fever with rigors in mosquito season.
Headache and aches without a obvious cold.
A person who has travelled to a higher-risk district.
Confusion, yellow eyes, very dark urine, breathlessness, or a fit.

What usually sits underneath

The parasite cycles in the blood and bursts red cells. That is the chill. Mosquito control at home — nets, no standing water, repellent at dusk and dawn — is the prevention. A coil in a closed room is not a complete plan, and it irritates lungs.

Care that is reasonable at home

Sleep under a net if mosquitoes are in the room.
Cover up in the evening.
Get tested rather than starting a cocktail.
Finish a prescribed course. Stopping early is a common failure.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

Any severe symptom above, or a child, a pregnant woman, or an older person with fever.
Fever that continues and the first test was negative.
A person who cannot drink.

Questions people ask

Does every chill mean malaria?

No. Urine infections, dengue, and viral fevers also shake. The test decides.

Is a full blood count the malaria test?

No. You need a test that looks for the parasite.

Can I prevent it with a weekly tablet?

Only if a clinician has advised prophylaxis for travel. It is not a routine household habit.
