Stiff joints in winter
Cold does not create arthritis. It makes an arthritic joint stiffer and a reluctant walker more reluctant. The remedy is warmth and movement, not a month in a chair.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Joints are stiffer after inactivity. Winter reduces walking, vitamin D exposure, and mood. Pain then increases, so walking reduces further. A short daily walk in the warm part of the day, a warm shower before the walk, and the medicines you were actually prescribed break that loop. Adding three painkillers because a neighbour did is how people get stomach bleeds and kidney trouble.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Stiffness that eases after twenty minutes of movement.
- A mood that has also dropped because you stopped going out.
- A joint that is newly hot, swollen, and feverish.
- Chest pain that you are calling a body ache. Do not walk through that.
What usually sits underneath
Fluid in the joint is thicker when you have been still. Muscle that has not been used supports the knee less. Indoor days also mean less light and worse sleep, which changes pain.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Walk at the warmest hour, even if it is indoors.
- Keep doing the sit-to-stand movements you were shown.
- Use heat for comfort, not instead of movement.
- Ask before you add a painkiller to one you already take.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- A hot swollen joint with fever.
- A fall, or a joint you cannot use.
- Black stools or stomach pain if you are on painkillers.

Questions people ask
Will a knee cap fix it?
It warms and reminds. It does not replace thigh strength. Do not wear it so tight that the leg swells.
Is pain a signal to stop walking entirely?
Sharp new pain is a signal to be seen. Familiar stiffness is a signal to warm up and move.
Do I need a vitamin D test every winter?
Not automatically. If you never go into the sun and you ache, ask. Do not stack sachets.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
