Looking after a small wound

A wound heals if it is clean, covered, and left alone. It does not heal faster because five relatives recommended five powders.

In plain language

Wash with clean running water. Remove visible dirt. A antiseptic solution is optional if the water wash was good. Do not pour spirit into a deep wound. Cover with a clean dressing and change it if it is wet. A tetanus booster is needed if the wound is dirty and your vaccination is not current. A animal bite is not a small wound. It needs the rabies protocol.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

A shallow cut that gapes very little and stops bleeding with pressure.
Mild redness the first day.
Redness that is spreading, pus, or fever.
A wound from a rusty or dirty object, or a bite.

What usually sits underneath

Bacteria need a closed, dirty, wet space. Cleaning and a dry cover remove that. Tight tourniquets, lime, toothpaste, and coffee powder add injury and infection. Stitches are for gaps that will not sit together, especially on the face, and they have a time window.

Care that is reasonable at home

Press a clean cloth for bleeding. Most small cuts stop.
Wash, then cover.
Keep the dressing dry. A wet bandage is a petri dish.
Watch the edges the next day.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

Bleeding that soaks through or spurts.
A bite, a deep puncture, or a wound with dirt you cannot wash out.
Spreading redness, red streaks, or fever.

Questions people ask

Should I let it breathe?

After it is clean, a cover protects it from dirt. ‘Letting it breathe’ often means letting the house dust in.

When was my last tetanus dose?

If you cannot remember and the wound is dirty, assume you need advice. A booster is cheaper than tetanus.

Can I use antibiotic powder?

Do not make that a habit. Most small wounds do not need an antibiotic at all. Ask if the wound is dirty or deep.
