Loose motions in children, without harmful shortcuts

The aim is a child who stays hydrated and fed, not a stool that looks normal by evening.

This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.

In plain language

Viral diarrhoea is common and settles over several days. Oral rehydration and ordinary food save more children than any stopper syrup. Blood, high fever, or a child who is going limp needs a clinician, because dysentery, typhoid, and severe dehydration are treated differently. Stopping the stool with an adult tablet can trap the illness and harm the child.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

What usually sits underneath

Contaminated water, unwashed fruit, and unwashed hands spread most of these infections. Antibiotics help a few of them and hurt the rest by side effects and resistance.

Care that is reasonable at home

  1. Start ORS early, before the child looks dry.
  2. Continue familiar foods: khichdi, curd, banana, rice.
  3. Wash hands with soap after every nappy or toilet visit.
  4. Keep ORS sachets at home and mix one sachet with the exact water written on it.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in

Come to OPD with a description of the stool and any ORS you have given. If the child is limp, say so at the desk. OPD runs Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at Near Rockford School, Anaj Mandi Chowk, Kadipur Road, Shakti Park, Sector 10A, Gurugram, Haryana. Call 98185 48492 or 70423 28047. Questions people ask

Should I stop milk?

Breast milk continues. Routine stopping of all dairy is not required for most children. Ask if the diarrhoea is prolonged.

Is rice water enough?

It does not replace ORS. You can give food, and you still need the salt-sugar solution made correctly.

Can I use the antibiotic from last time?

No. Wrong antibiotics are a common harm. A clinician should decide.

If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
