Phones, mood, and a mind that will not idle
The phone is not a moral failing. It is a device designed to remove stopping points. Your mood may still be paying for it.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Rapid content raises arousal and makes ordinary life feel flat. People then scroll to escape the flatness, and sleep moves later. Anxiety and low mood both get worse when sleep is short and comparison is infinite. You do not need a digital detox in a forest. You need a few friction points: no phone in the bed, no phone for the first half hour of the morning, and notifications off for all but the humans.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- You pick up the phone for one message and lose forty minutes.
- Irritability when you try to stop.
- Sleep that starts only after the battery is low.
- A young person whose marks, mood, and friendships are all shrinking around a screen.
What usually sits underneath
Variable rewards — sometimes a message, sometimes nothing — are the most habit-forming pattern we know. The brain checks again. At midnight the check costs sleep, and sleep loss lowers mood the next day, which makes the check more tempting.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Charge the phone outside the bedroom. Buy a cheap alarm clock if that was the excuse.
- Turn off non-human notifications.
- Leave the phone in another room during meals.
- If a teenager is in trouble, agree the rules with them, including your own phone at dinner. A rule that only the child follows will fail.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Screen use that has replaced school, food, or friends.
- Bullying, a scam, or a child being asked for photos. That is a safeguarding problem.
- Mood symptoms that include wanting to die. The phone is not the emergency. The mood is.
How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in
If mood or sleep is already ill, come to OPD. Do not expect an app blocker to treat depression. OPD runs Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at Near Rockford School, Anaj Mandi Chowk, Kadipur Road, Shakti Park, Sector 10A, Gurugram, Haryana. Call 98185 48492 or 70423 28047. There is no appointment form on this website.
Questions people ask
Is all screen time bad?
No. A call with a friend or a film you chose is different from two hours of unchosen short video.
What about my job?
Work screens can end. The second shift of scrolling is the one that injures sleep.
Will a tracker app help?
It helps people who like numbers. The bedroom rule helps more people.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
