School bags, headaches, and the annual health check
Not every Monday stomachache is a lie. Not every one is a disease. The pattern tells you which.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
A useful school check looks at weight, vision, teeth, hearing, and whether the child can keep up physically. Headaches from skipped breakfast, poor vision, or too little water are common. Pain that is only on school mornings, with a well child on Sundays, may be worry or bullying. Pain that wakes the child, causes vomiting, or comes with fever is medical until proved otherwise.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Squinting, sitting close to the board, or a sudden fall in marks.
- Headaches that end after a meal or a drink of water.
- Tooth pain that the child hides until the cheek swells.
- Limping, joint swelling, or a fever and rash.
What usually sits underneath
Growth, eyes, and teeth change quickly in these years. Bags that are far too heavy, and chairs that do not fit, add neck and back pain. Anxiety adds abdominal pain that is real pain, produced by a healthy gut.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Ask the school what the check included, and read the note.
- Get eyes tested if the child squints or complains.
- Breakfast before school. A completely empty morning makes headaches.
- If pain is only on school days, talk to the child about the day itself, and tell the teacher.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Fever with the pain, weight loss, night pain, or blood in stool or urine.
- A headache with vomiting, visual change, or a child who is hard to wake.
- Limping that lasts, or a joint that is hot.
How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in
Bring the school note and the child’s own sentence about the pain. OPD can separate a refractive error or a worry from an illness that needs tests. OPD runs Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at Near Rockford School, Anaj Mandi Chowk, Kadipur Road, Shakti Park, Sector 10A, Gurugram, Haryana. Call 98185 48492 or 70423 28047. There is no appointment form on this website.
Questions people ask
How heavy can the bag be?
Light enough that the child is not bent double. If you can move books out, do. Pain that persists still deserves a look.
Should I send them if they have a cold?
Fever, miserable breathing, or vomiting: keep them home. A mild runny nose in an otherwise well child is usually fine.
Are vitamin syrups needed every year?
Not automatically. Food first. Use syrups if a clinician found a deficiency.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
