Screens, sleep, and a child who will not settle

A tired child looks badly behaved. Often the first medicine is a phone that leaves the bedroom.

This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.

In plain language

Light from screens tells the brain it is still daytime. Short videos also train a child to expect a new hit of excitement every few seconds, so a book or a parent’s voice feels dull. Sleep loss then worsens irritability, appetite, and school performance. The repair is boring and effective: a charging point outside the bedroom and a predictable night.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

What usually sits underneath

The brain’s clock is shifted by light and by excitement. Content that is fast and endless has no natural stopping point. Parents’ own phones teach the real rule.

Care that is reasonable at home

  1. Choose a time when screens end, at least an hour before bed.
  2. Keep phones and televisions out of the sleeping room.
  3. Replace the last hour with a wash, a story, or sitting together. Boredom is allowed.
  4. Do not use a tablet as the only way to feed a toddler. That habit is hard to unwind.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in

If sleep is badly broken, bring the child to OPD. We can look for anaemia, snoring, or worry, and not blame the phone for everything. OPD runs Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at Near Rockford School, Anaj Mandi Chowk, Kadipur Road, Shakti Park, Sector 10A, Gurugram, Haryana. Call 98185 48492 or 70423 28047. There is no appointment form on this website.

Questions people ask

What is a fair daily limit?

For school-age children, a limit you can enforce on weekdays matters more than a perfect number. Under two, avoid screens as a habit.

Do educational videos count?

They still emit light and still delay sleep if they run late. Use them earlier.

What if homework needs the phone?

Homework ends. Then the phone charges in another room. The second step is the one that protects sleep.

If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
