Skin infections in the wet months

A steroid cream makes a fungal rash look better for a week and then much worse. The fair-in-a-night tubes sold for ‘daad’ are a common reason rashes become huge.

In plain language

Fungus loves damp folds: toes, groin, under the breast, and a waistband that never dries. The rash is itchy, with a clearer centre and a more active edge. Boils are bacterial and painful. Scabies itches wildly at night and spreads to the household. These are different illnesses. One tube does not treat all three. Dryness, a correct cream for a correct duration, and not sharing towels are the practical half.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

Itch in a fold that has been damp all monsoon.
A ring-shaped patch that is spreading.
A painful red boil, or a streak of red running from it.
Night itch in several family members.

What usually sits underneath

Sweat, synthetic clothes, obesity in the folds, and steroid creams are the fuels. Diabetes makes both fungus and boils harder to clear. A rash that will not leave is sometimes the way diabetes is found.

Care that is reasonable at home

Wash and dry the fold. Change out of wet clothes, including school uniforms.
Use the antifungal for the full number of weeks, not until the itch dips.
Do not apply a combination steroid cream because it feels cool.
Treat close contacts if the diagnosis is scabies. One treated person in an untreated bed fails.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

A boil on the face, a fever, or a red streak.
A rash in someone who is very unwell.
A child with widespread raw skin.

Questions people ask

Will powder cure it?

Powder helps keep a fold dry. It does not replace an antifungal if fungus is established.

Can I use the cream for two days?

No. Fungus grows back. Finish the course.

Is it from dirty blood?

No. It is from a germ on the skin and a damp environment. That phrase causes shame and delay.
