A tiffin that comes back empty
A tiffin that returns untouched teaches you nothing except that the child did not like it. Ask what they ate instead. It was probably a packet.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Children need a lunch that is familiar, not heroic. Idli, a stuffed roti, poha, a paneer roll, curd with fruit, or leftover dal-chawal in a leak-proof box beats a new health recipe every Monday. Include a protein. A box of only biscuits is a sugar crash by the third period. Keep water in a bottle they will open. Juice boxes are a sweet, not a drink.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- The box comes back full and the child is irritable.
- They are hungry again immediately after a white-bread snack.
- Tooth pain they mention only at night. The tiffin may be fine and the tooth may not.
- A food allergy. That tiffin is a medical plan, not a menu idea.
What usually sits underneath
Energy for the afternoon has to last. Protein and a little fat slow hunger. A sweet drink does the opposite. Children also refuse food that smells strongly after three hours in a bag. Dry, familiar, and not too colourful is a feature.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Pack food they have already eaten happily at home.
- Add curd or boiled egg if those are accepted.
- Put water, not juice, in the bottle.
- Agree one ‘packet day’ if you must, rather than a daily secret packet.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Weight loss, or a child who eats almost nothing at any meal.
- A allergic reaction: swelling, hives, breathing trouble. That is urgent.
- A tiffin that is being thrown away because of bullying at lunch. Ask.

Questions people ask
Does it have to be hot?
No. Safe and eaten beats hot and refused. In summer, choose food that survives without spoiling.
Are nuts a good snack?
For children without allergy, yes, if the school allows them. Whole nuts are a choking risk for the very young.
What if they swap food?
That is social and normal. Keep the home meals steady so one swapped lunch does not decide the week.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
