When to bring a child in, and when the night can wait
You are allowed to come. You are also allowed to comfort a mildly feverish child at home. This list is the line between the two.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Come the same day, or use emergency services, if a baby under three months has fever, if any child is struggling to breathe, fitting, unrousable, has a rash with fever and looks ill, is dehydrated and cannot drink, or has a injury with loss of consciousness. A runny nose, a single vomit, or a fever in a child who drinks and plays can usually be watched with fluids and the correct dose of fever medicine.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- The child looks at you, drinks, and settles between symptoms.
- You can wake them fully.
- Breathing is not fast and the chest is not pulling in.
- You have a way to return quickly if that changes.
What usually sits underneath
Most illnesses declare themselves. The ones that harm children quickly affect breathing, circulation, and alertness. Parents are good at noticing ‘not themselves’. Trust that phrase.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Write doses and times so night-time care is not a double dose.
- Keep ORS and the child’s weight in a note on the fridge.
- If you come, bring the card, the bottles you gave, and a spare set of clothes.
- Say the worst symptom first at the desk: ‘breathing fast’, not the whole week of cough, if breathing is the issue.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Any of the red flags above.
- A parent’s clear sense that the child is deteriorating, even if the temperature is not dramatic.
- Pain in the tummy that is constant and worsening, or a testis that is suddenly swollen and agonising.

Questions people ask
Will you think I overreacted?
No. A well child sent home with advice is a successful visit.
Should I feed before coming?
If they are hungry and alert, yes. If they are vomiting or very breathless, do not force food.
What if the fever falls with syrup and they perk up?
Watch at home with fluids. Return if it persists, if breathing changes, or if they stop drinking.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
