Burns in the kitchen
Cool running water, for twenty minutes, is the treatment. Toothpaste, butter, ink, and turmeric are not. They hold heat in and infect the burn.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
A burn keeps damaging tissue after the flame or the oil is gone. Water removes that heat. Then cover with a clean cloth. Do not burst blisters. Do not put ice directly on skin. It causes a second injury. Burns of the face, hands, joints, or genitals, burns that go all the way around a limb, electrical burns, and any burn in a child or an older person should be seen. A electrical burn can look small and injure deep tissue.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- A small red splash that hurts and does not involve the face or hand in a complicated way.
- A blister that is intact.
- White or charred skin, or a burn that is numb.
- A burn from a cylinder blast, a chemical, or electricity.
What usually sits underneath
Hot oil holds temperature longer than water. Chemical burns need a lot of running water and removal of soaked cloth. Electrical burns need a hospital even if the skin mark is modest, because the heart can be involved.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Put the part under cool running water. Remove rings and bangles before swelling starts.
- Cover with a clean cloth or cling film loosely.
- Give a painkiller that is safe for the person if help is not immediate.
- Do not peel cloth that is stuck to the burn.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Any of the serious patterns above, or a burn you are unsure about.
- Breathing difficulty after a fire. Smoke injures the airway.
- A child. The surface area is larger than it looks.

Questions people ask
How long should I run the water?
About twenty minutes. A quick splash is not enough.
Can I use an ointment?
After cooling, a clinician can recommend one. Do not put a random cream on a burn you have not shown anyone if it is large.
Will a blister scar less if I pop it?
No. The roof is a dressing. Leave it.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
