Stroke: the signs to act on immediately
A stroke is a blocked or a burst blood vessel in the brain. Treatment is time-limited. Waiting to see if the face ‘comes back’ wastes the window.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Sudden weakness of one side, a droop of the mouth, slurred speech, sudden loss of vision, or a sudden severe imbalance are the usual signs. They can be painless. A clot can sometimes be dissolved or removed if the person reaches a stroke-ready hospital fast enough. Not every hospital can do that. Going quickly still matters, because even when clot-busting is not possible, blood pressure, sugar, and swallowing need urgent handling. Do not give aspirin at home unless a clinician has already told you to. A bleed and a clot look the same in the living room.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- One side of the face does not move when they smile.
- One arm drifts down.
- Speech is slurred or they cannot find words.
- A sudden terrible headache, a fit, or a collapse.
What usually sits underneath
Pressure, smoking, diabetes, and a irregular heartbeat are the risks you can change before the day. On the day, the only useful action is emergency transport. Do not feed the person. A stroke can remove the ability to swallow safely.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Note the time you last saw them well. That time decides treatment.
- Call emergency help. If you must move them, go to the nearest emergency service, not to a clinic that will send you onward after an hour.
- Do not give water, food, or a home aspirin.
- If symptoms vanish in minutes, still go. A passing stroke is a warning of a larger one.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Any of the sudden signs above. There is no mild version to sleep on.
- A head injury followed by weakness.
- A person on blood thinners who develops a sudden headache or weakness.

Questions people ask
Can a stroke happen in a young person?
Yes. Less often. Sudden one-sided weakness is still a stroke until proved otherwise.
What if they refuse to go?
A stroke can remove judgement. Treat it as the emergency it is.
Will they recover if we are late?
Some recovery happens anyway. Early arrival improves the odds. Late arrival does not mean nothing can be done.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
