Eyes after forty

Needing reading glasses is ordinary. Glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and a growing cataract are not solved at a spectacle stall.

In plain language

The lens stiffens and near focus fails. That is presbyopia. Separately, pressure inside the eye can rise and kill the nerve quietly. Diabetes damages the retina quietly. Cataract clouds the lens slowly. A proper eye check after forty, and earlier if you have diabetes or a family history of glaucoma, looks at those. A new curtain, flashes, or sudden loss of vision is an emergency, not a new-number problem.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

Arms that are suddenly too short for the phone.
Glare while driving at night.
A family history of glaucoma.
Sudden floaters, flashes, or a shadow. Go the same day.

What usually sits underneath

Age changes the lens. Pressure and diabetes change the nerve and the retina. Neither waits for a convenient week. Steroid drops, used casually for itching, can raise eye pressure and cause real harm.

Care that is reasonable at home

Get a proper check, not only a spectacle test, if you are over forty or have diabetes.
Carry old glasses.
Do not buy reading glasses in a market and assume the eyes have been examined.
Control sugar and pressure. The retina depends on them.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

Sudden visual loss, a curtain, or pain with redness and halos.
Double vision that is new.
An eye injury from a grinding job or a firecracker.

Are cheap reading glasses harmful?

The wrong number strains you. The larger harm is assuming they replaced an eye examination.

How often after forty?

Often every one to two years, and yearly if you have diabetes. Follow the interval the eye clinician gave you.

Can screens ruin the eye?

They cause strain and dryness. They do not cause cataract. Rest breaks help the strain.
