Questions worth asking before you leave the room
You will forget the question in the corridor. Write it down before you go in. A visit you did not understand will be repeated, badly, at a chemist.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Ask what the problem is called, what you should do today, what should make you come back sooner, whether every medicine is still needed, and when the next visit is. Ask the cost of a test if that will decide whether you do it. A good clinician is not offended. If a medicine is started, ask the name and the time of day, and what side effect matters. If a medicine is stopped, ask why, so you do not restart it from an old strip.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- You leave and cannot tell your family what was said.
- You have three strips at home and do not know which are current.
- A test was ordered and you do not know what question it answers.
- You are too unwell to talk. Take a companion whose job is to remember.
What usually sits underneath
OPD rooms are crowded. Clinicians compress. Patients nod. The nod is not understanding. A written question survives the compression. So does a companion who is allowed to speak.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Write the questions. Two is enough if they are the real ones.
- Bring the strips and the folder.
- Repeat back the plan in one sentence before you stand up.
- Ask what to do if the symptom worsens tonight.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Any emergency symptom. Ask it first, before the list of smaller questions.
- A medicine you are frightened of. Say the fear. A unspoken fear becomes a missed dose.
- A result on your phone from another lab. Show it. Do not summarise it.
How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in
This is how we prefer a visit to end: with you knowing the next step. The desk cannot answer medical questions by chat, because the hospital does not run a form or a inbox clinic. OPD runs Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at Near Rockford School, Anaj Mandi Chowk, Kadipur Road, Shakti Park, Sector 10A, Gurugram, Haryana. Call 98185 48492 or 70423 28047. There is no appointment form on this website.
Questions people ask
Will the doctor be annoyed?
Annoyance at a clear question is a bad sign. Most clinicians would rather answer than see you return after taking the medicine wrong.
What if there is no time?
Ask the single most important question first. ‘What should make me come back?’ is often that question.
Can I record the visit?
Ask permission. A written line on the prescription is usually better, because you will find it.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
